Random Notes on Recent Travels

April 9th, 2012

It’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks, with 3 back-to-back trips, including my first An Event Apart Conference (#aea) in Seattle. No time for a detailed post on that amazing conference–instead I’ll simply put together a list. (in no particular order)

  • we take high speed internet for granted. Trust me…free wi fi…Is. Not. Fast.
  • train travel beats air travel, hands down.
  • iPad is wonderful for conferences: lightweight, long-lived battery, fits in purse
  • iPad w/3G helps overcome slow wifi frustration
  • #aea puts on a damn fine conference: venue, food, swag, Twitter feed, content access and speaker availability
  • always double-check your hotel’s wifi policy–some still charge for access!
  • attendee mix was refreshingly varied with plenty of women and gray hair in audience–not just 20-something ‘brogrammers’
  • Luke Wroblewski is a Keynote god. Not only does he wield this tool expertly for presentations, but it’s his go to wireframe and early prototype app
  • time to start using Keynote myself!
  • @LukeW managed to attend, present, take #aea notes AND publish them:
  • Jared Spool (@jmspool) is hilarious. Who knew geeky content could be so funny?
  • having a back-up person cover your project(s) when out of town is a seriously awesome idea. Thank you, @NancySeeger!
  • iPhone 4S w/camera+ app is FUN
  • Facebook is finally my friend
  • I will never be a two-thumb typist
  • eating out every night is a delight in places like Seattle and San Francisco. Nom!
  • @Zeldman & @MeyerWeb are nice guys who put on a great conference! :)
